AU SUMMARY
DANGAN RONPA AU:
SUPER HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL HALL MONITOR OF DESPAIR
SUPER HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL DESPAIR
The Mastermind: Kiyotaka Ishimaru. Ishimaru as always feels compelled to enforce order among his classmates, and takes it to an extreme. He is unable to understand and connect with his classmates, save for one thing. Despair.
The Accomplice: Mukuro Ikusaba. Unchanged overall save for being Ishimaru’s brother rather than Junko’s sister.
Despair Twins: Like Junko and Mukuro, Ishimaru and Mukuro are fraternal twins, HOWEVER, they look much more similar than Junko and Mukuro did. They both have short black hair, and are both well built, Mukuro due to being a SHSL Soldier and Ishimaru due to the fact that he is in canon and there’s no reason for that to change. The main difference between the twins is their eye color, and that Mukuro styles his hair differently, similar to canon Mukuro but shorter. Their relationship is the same, Ishimaru being the abusive controlling “younger” brother, Mukuro being the coerced kind “older” brother. Unlike in canon, Mukuro lasts until Chapter 3. The twins switch off several times during the course of events, since with Mukuro’s hair styled up and wearing colored contacts, the two are virtually identical.
The Mole: Celestia Lundenberg. Disposition is unchanged, only involvement in plot differs, and is detailed below.
SUMMARY
Backstory;
Ishimaru was always a weird kid, he had trouble making friends and connecting to the other kids. He clung to their mother at home, and Mukuro at school. Their father didn't have the patience to accomodate Ishimaru's special needs and would yell at him a lot for well, being the way he is, which would only just cause him to hide behind his mother and brother more. His mother was sort of browbeaten by their father and would more often than not crumple in the face of his rage, but Mukuro would stand up to him, even if it resulted in him getting hit. Mukuro was kind to Ishimaru and just wanted him to be happy and safe. Ishimaru looked up to him and aspired to be as strong and brave as his older twin. At a certain point, maybe when they were about 10-11 years old, they were taken away from their parents (because of their father) and sent to live with their grandparents. Their grandfather was a business man as in canon, but was also a former agent of fenrir. He was responsible for getting Mukuro into Fenrir as well as teaching both boys how to fight. Being separated from their father as well as the combat training allowed Ishimaru to turn from a timid child to the horror he is today. When Mukuro returned from his stint in Fenrir to attend Hope's Peak, Ishimaru guilted him, saying he "abandoned him." Mukuro of course despite being a hardened soldier had a soft spot for his brotherover their two years at Hopes Peak he slowly browbeat Mukuro into doing whatever he said.
Pregame;
The classmates all made the same friendships, save one difference. It was Mondo, Mukuro, and Chihiro that were close. Ishimaru was friends with them as well, mainly because of his closeness with Mukuro, but due to his innability to fully understand other people’s feelings, was not as close as the other three. He resented this, and was jealous of his brother’s closeness with them. He often butted heads with Mondo, as Mondo’s flagrant rulebreaks was just UNACCEPTABLE!
As usual, one year before the events of the game, The Worst Most Despair Inducing Event in History (or whatever the hell it’s called) occured. This either was caused by OR caused Ishimaru to be jarred out of his innocuous ‘base’ personality (which I am using as the equivalent to Junko’s moemoe ugu personality) that he had been “stuck” in for the past year, and once the school went into lockdown he and Mukuro hatched their plan for the despair game.
Chapter 1;
All 15 students wake up and “meet” as usual. Mukuro is disguised as Ishimaru rather than Junko. Ishimaru is operating Monobear. Plot proceeds same as it does in the game, Maizono attempts to murder Leon and ends up murdered by him instead. Junko (the ACTUAL Junko, who in this AU is really just a SHSL Fashion Girl rather than also being batshit insane.) breaks the rules by attacking Monobear and is promptly punished for it with death (since, as a SHSL Hall Monitor, Ishimaru does NOT tolerate rule breakers.) Things continues as usual.
Chapter 2;
Chapter 2 proceeds as canon until the infamous sauna event. Since Ishimaru has been forcing Mukuro to act like him to make it possible for the two to switch places if needed, Mukuro has had to distance himself from one of his best friends, Mondo, instead assuming a combative relationship with him (as without Mukuro around to mediate, the two hadn’t gotten along very well before the memory wipe.) Ishimaru then decides to step in and STEAL MUKURO’S BEST FRIEND. Later on in chapter 6 he would explain his motives as "It was a test that I gave to myself! And, armed with my youthful vigor and years of study, I have finally aced it! Your tears are the final proof that I truly understand this thing called friendship!" (ty Lotus) And that was the sauna scene.
Following this is the event with Chihiro revealing his secret to Mondo. Mondo DOES flip out, but manages to avoid killing Chihiro, as his secret is not about Daiya, but instead about how he secretly likes cute things like puppies and cotton candy. (As Ishimaru wouldn’t permit his “brother” to have a decent motive since he doesn’t want Mondo to die. Yet.) Mondo tells his own secret to Chihiro and the two have their training session as planned. This goes on for a few days, the trio of Mondo, Ishimaru/Mukuro, and Chihiro reformed, until Fukawa/Syo overhears the boys training and Syo, excited by the concept of Chihiro being a crossdresser, murders him. The trial is very short.
Chapter 3;
Mukuro is distraught, and upset with his brother, who promised he’d make sure that Mondo and Chihiro wouldn’t die. The catatonic Ishimaru is the last appearance of Mukuro before he’s killed. Upon seeing Naegi come up with the idea that seeing Alter Ego would help Mukuro, Ishimaru jumps in, breaking his brother out of his funk with the news himself, and then NOT LETTING HIM GO SEE HIM, instead saying they’re going to switch places again. Ishimaru plays along, switching to his “Ishida” attitude upon seeing Alter Ego, mainly out of excitement that he gets to come out to “play”/to fuck with everyone. Mondo and Ishimaru are of course doing their best to protect Alter Ego, the last remains of their best friend, from Yamada’s creepy interests. Ishimaru then decides that his brother was just going to become a nuisance at this point. He may have been broken out of his catatonia, but he was continuing to show signs of reluctance of going along with the plan. Ishimaru reaches out to his mole, Celes (whose motive for working for the mastermind is of course for the promise of granting her a castle once the despair game is over.) to get rid of Mukuro. Just as in the game, Celes plays ‘Ishimaru’ and Yamada off of each other. Ishimaru switched back with Mukuro just in time for Mukuro to go investigate the note. HOWEVER, unlike the game, since Mukuro is a SHSL Soldier, it is a mutual kill, Yamada only managing to off his target because Celes was distracting Mukuro. None of the Justice Robo/Framing Hagakure stuff happens because it was stupid. Celes didn’t murder anyone so she gets off scott free! No one is executed! Both the murderers and victims are dead. Mondo is horribly upset but hey at least his best friend didn’t get turned into butter. IT COULD BE WORSE!
Chapter 4;
Now that his hindrance of a brother is gone, Ishimaru decides that he doesn’t really want to have the risk of keeping Celes around either. The other students (mainly Naegi and Kirigiri) felt like there was something off about the last murder trial, so Ishimaru decides to nip that in the bud. He has Monobear announce "I have a mole and they manipulated Ishimaru and Hifumi into killing each other" and elaborate that the students technically missed the “true” culprit, but due to the special circumstances, he would allow them to live, provided that they discover the identity of the mole and “bring them to justice.” Upon being asked, Monobear confirms that by that he means killing them.
HOWEVER, a school trial will still be held for the mole if they are killed. And if the other students are unable to identify the culprit they will all die as usual. So essentially one person will have to sacrifice themselves to save the rest from dying. Big damn hero Sakura manages to figure out (possibly by chance) that the mole is Celes, and kills her. She then commits suicide to save the others the DESPAIR of having to sentence her to death, just as she normally does in Chapter 4. BUT THAT WOULDN’T BE MUCH OF A TRIAL AT ALL, NOW WOULD IT? Using Monobear, Ishimaru tampers with the crime scene to make it seem like it was the other way around. Naegi, Aoi, and Kirigiri have to convince the other three that Celes, was in fact the mole. No one is executed yet again MAN ISHIMARU YOU SUCK AT EXECUTING PEOPLE!!! Alter Ego’s laptop is “executed”, though.
Chapter 5;
This chapter is pretty much the same, the 16th student, Mukuro Ikusaba, comes to light. Monoluchador!Ishimaru tries to kill Naegi because he is a big damn meddler and is stopped by Kirigiri. And because of that attempts to frame Kirigiri for murdering Mukuro, staging the crime scene with Mukuro’s corpse. Since Fukawa’s not around, it’s Togami who’s strongarmed into investigating the body (by Mondo, who is getting really fucking tired of his bullshit attitude, as is everyone else.) and gets blown away in the explosion. ‘But seems perfectly fine because he's just that perfect’ (ty again Lotus.) The investigation/trial proceeds as normal, including Alter Ego saving Naegi.
Chapter 6;
Pretty much the same investigation and such as in the game. Obvious difference being that the big hint isn’t the Gungir wounds on Mukuro’s body, but the resemblance between him and Ishimaru. At the trial, Ishimaru of course shows up once the group figures out the whole scheme of Mukuro posing as Ishimaru and Ishimaru being the mastermind. He proceeds to demonstrate the fact that he’s fucking insane, obviously. He then upsets Mondo by telling him about his aformentioned friendship test
"And now, all that is left is to finally understand this feeling called despair. Are those tears tears of despair as well?" (Lotus again)Then of course comes the reveal of ~MONOWORLD~ and everyone being NO WAY THAT HAPPENED SHUT UP! Since Syo isn’t around to confirm that it is in fact true, instead we get Alter Ego, Ishimaru had kept him around on another laptop, as long as it was out of the hands of Naegi and the others, it didn’t matter what Alter Ego found out, and he’d been scouring the school’s servers long enough to find out that Monoworld is in fact A Thing that happened. Ishimaru in particular goes after Mondo, using his “cute brother” persona (in other words the Ishimaru who Mondo is friends with), asking him if he’d doubt his “brothers”. Other than that, the basic content of the trial would be basically the same, punctuated by Mondo being alternately enraged and distraught.He’d also serve as the biggest roadblock at the end when Naegi has to convince everyone to vote to get the fuck out of the school & execute Ishimaru. But Naegi is still Our Protagonist, so he suceeds and Ishimaru is executed in the same manner as Junko. And then the game ends essentially the same way, really the only difference being that Mondo survived instead of Fukawa. THE END.
